Five Step Plan
1. Detangle
2. Pre poo
3. Cleanse
4. Condition
5. Style
Details:
1. Detangle on dry hair with fingers first. This is a must for my fine, high density strands. I section with my fingers only, adding a small dab of coconut oil, and removing as much shed hair as possible. Then I twist each detangled section. This has saved me so much hair. I usually have my hair in a stretched out style so I can successfully (as in no need for a comb later on) detangle my hair this way.
2. Pre-poo on dry hair using either the Moisturizing Deep Conditioner or Carrot Protein Masque. I apply the deep conditioner to each twist one at a time from root to tip. Massage into hair. Cover with a plastic cap sleep overnight OR steam for 20 minutes.
3. Cleanse with either Avocado Cleansing Cream or Just Peachy Shampoo. Do not remove twists. Rinse deep conditioner out first. Cleanse with Rhassoul Deep Detox Cleanser once every 6 weeks.
4. Condition with Detangle Me Grapeseed Conditioner or moisturizing leave in spray. Allow hair to dry about 75%. Take down one twist at a time and carefully detangle with a modified denman brush or a wide tooth comb if necessary. Re-twist and repeat until all twists have been thoroughly detangled.
5. Style my hair as desired for 1 - 2 weeks. I blow dry my hair 1 - 2x per month depending on how I will wear my hair.
I like to wear my hair in a protective style for at least 2 weeks out of every month just for the sake of low manipulation.
If I'm going to wear it loose I coat each twist still damp from step 4 with an oil, butter, or water-free cream then set twists on flexi rods or wrap into a bantu knot and allow to dry completely overnight.
If I'm going to wear it in braids or twists for the entire 2 weeks, I allow the damp twists from step 4 to dry completely then blow dry each section using a round brush and a blow dryer with a nozzle attachment. Coat each dry section with an oil, butter, or water-free cream and braid or twist. This is usually done when I wear yarn braids, braids with synthetic hair or micro-twists.
***I do 4 out of 5 steps (1, 2, 4, & 5) weekly and only include step 3 (cleanse) when I have build up/dirty scalp.
I DO NOT cleanse if my scalp is not dirty.
*** When wearing out styles (warmer months) I do steps 1, 2, 4, & 5 every 3 - 4 days.
*** When wearing protective styles (braids with extensions or micro twists) I follow a different regimen.
***Blow dry 1 - 2x per month.
***When wearing yarn braids I re-braids 4 weeks. Usually worn for 6 - 9 months at a time.
